Youth Support

The youth support service is designed to raise the level of self-esteem and confidence amongst the most at risk Māori youth in the Hutt Valley region. We do this by utilising Māori principles, practices and values to assist youth to apply these positively to their lives and the lives of their whānau.

Working one-on-one or in groups with youth offering support and advice in the area of suicide prevention, self-esteem and confidence building, advocacy and abuse prevention programmes, such as:

  • Holiday Programme : targeted at those identified “at risk” young Māori youth between the ages of 10 – 13yrs.  Referrals to this programme must come through CYFS, Police, schools or other community social work agency.
  • Dawn Programme : follows a strict 10 week programme Taiaha Wānanga philosophy available to boys between the ages of 9 years and over.  Referrals to this programme must come through CYFS, Police, schools or other community social work agency.
  • Hui Rangatahi : a weekend of respite care for youth between the ages of  10 – 15yrs.  This is available to youth of whānau being supported by Kokiri Marae social workers and other services operated from Kokiri Marae.
  • One-on-One Support : working with individual youth and their whānau to improve their long term outcomes.
