Growing Young Maori Entrepreneurs
(GYM-E)
The GYM-E programme has grown out of a research programme. The main focus of the research is growing young maori entrepreneurs. What we want to explore is will this make a difference to the health and wellbeing of whanau, hapu, iwi and communities?
The programme is aimed at Rangatahi between the ages of 12-24 years.
Programme Activities
- Promoting Maori youth participation in Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) either at school or through Marae and Whanau groups.
- A weekend regional wananga for Maori participants where they will develop their company’s product ideas further during the wananga that will culminate in a presentation during which participating companies/groups will compete for a prize. There will be motivational speakers and mentors to support participants.
- Winners of regional wananga will attend national week long wananga. They will further develop their business plans and products over the week. The last 24 hours will be a business planning competition that will culminate in a presentation during which teams will be judged.
- Scholarships to study at a tertiary institution.
- Up-dating and maintenance of the GYM-E website www.projectgyme.maori.nz
- Monthly networking sessions held at Kokiri Hauora for participants.
- Recruiting business mentors especially from among Maori business people.
We are interested in hearing from rangatahi between the age of 12-24 years who are either in business, are wanting to start a business or have an idea for a business.
