GYM-E Wananga Wellington Region - 24-26 March 2006

The first Wellington Region GYM-E Wananga was held at Pipitea Marae and Victoria University School of Business from the 24 – 26 March this year.  40 participants attended from the following schools:  Hutt Valley High School, Hato Paora College, Turakina Maori Girls College, Palmerston North Girls High School, and Waiopehu College.

The kaupapa for the wananga was Product Development.  Teams from each school became companies and worked hard on developing their product and in many cases, came up with a prototype.  Resources they had available included:

  • A presentation on the process of developing a product by Sarah Reo of Cultureflow.
  • Business Mentors who helped and supported each team through the process.
  • Use of Victoria University School of Business facilities – computer lab and internet access, lecture theatre and space for teams to work in.
  • Accommodation at Pipitea marae.

The presentations delivered on Sunday morning before a panel of judges really demonstrated how hard the teams had worked (many until 1.00am the night before!!) and as a result some amazing and very innovative products were created and developed.

Congratulations to all our young entrepreneurs – they are certain to provide some stiff competition at Nationals!  The award winners on Sunday morning were:

  • Korowai Productions; Palmerston North Girls High School – Wellington Region Winning Business Presentation.
  • Kimi Limited; Turakina Maori Girls College – Most Innovative Product Award
  • Nuunu Heke; Waiopehu College – Leadership Award

Many thanks to the Wellington Region Wananga Sponsor – Hui Taumata and their team for their help and smooth running of the facilities over the weekend, especially on the computer and powerpoint presentation front.  Thanks also to the Catering Crew from Kokiri Marae Hauora – the kai was tino pai!!  Te Whakaae Kapahaka Roopu – what an outstanding and entertaining performance!

To our Business Mentors and Speakers (Sarah from Cultreflow and Mina and Maaka from Minaaka Ltd), you are what drive the wananga and the minds of our Rangatahi, not to mention the competitiveness!  It was a lot of fun working with you.

Kia kaha Wellington Region, lets give them a good run for their money at Nationals.
